I've had many requests for a lesson on what to do with the hi-hat to spice up grooves. Here are a few simple ideas for which you can find many applications. The lesson is continued (including a cool Vinnie Colaiuta lick) on my lessons page at www.joecrabtree.com/lessons
Practicing efficient is something all drummers should strive for. In today’s lesson I’m going to share a few ideas that have helped me to make the most of my practice time.
In today’s lesson I’m going to share a few ideas on how to create a drum part.
These are some of the single bass drum patterns that I use:RH - Right HandLH - Left HandRF - Right FootThe first one is the double stroke roll between the right hand and the right foot (RH RH LF LF). I am applying the techniques that I demonstrated in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKFAiG...Start slow to develop these patterns. Using a metronome is a big help too.You can add some backbeats or even phrases using the left hand while the right hand is playing. The second pattern is RH LH RF RF. The third is RH LH RH LH RF RF. It is a sextuplet. The fourth is RH LH RH LH RH LH RF RF.
In Part 2, we continue to work on controlling the hi-hat in a groove setting. Here’s a couple more ideas to try. Enjoy!
In today’s lesson I’m going to discuss a great way to get more mileage from your practice time with method books or sheets. By swinging the notes, you’ll open up a whole new area to explore!
Something that Bonzo would do during a jam. Hope you like it.
How Bonzo got that sound in his fills.
