recording and head choice

ebehme2 - Tue, 01/12/2010 - 01:25 | 5,391 views

so the band i gig with is heading to the studio to record some tracks at the end of january. It's jam friendly acoustic rock that is very energetic.

i'm torn between aquarian super 2 clear or remo power stroke 3 clear (i have aquarian classic singles on bottom that are brand new)

any objections/recommendations?

i normally play with single ply, but i hear that it's better to use 2 ply heads when recording...

thanks

Evan,
If you were working as a studio musician providing a service to clients that have specific sound expectations your concern for drum heads is warranted. But if its your sound you're dealing with then don't worry about what other people think.

All of these heads can produce great sound. The question is: is it your sound? This is a perfect opportunity to grow in that direction. Use it to better define you. Be confident in your choice and that it fits your touch, feel, and style. If it sounds good without a mic it will sound good with a mic.

If the engineer gives you difficulties about how hard it is to record your sound, and the drums sound great a few feet away. Call BS on him. Change mics, mic position, or engineer. His job is to make you sound like you! This is not about being a hard ass. Its about being confident in YOUR sound.

Do your prep work and be confident in your sound:) Whatever that takes!

I don't know if this is any help to you, but on my You tube videos I'm using Remo pinstripe (2ply) top and bottom. Very deep thudy sound. They are on my profile page if you want to listen.
