Hey everybody I'm new to the site here and am in awe. I am a very new aspiring drummer and have decided to stop wishing/thinking about drumming one day and finally start.
Unfortunately I currently live in an apartment so there is hurdle number 1. Anyone in a similar setting that has found a way to work around it Please share your way of working around it. I.E. what type of set electric or acoustic, and if acoustic how do you silence well enough if Possible. I live on the ground floor of an apartment so no one under me.
Kinda referring back to the previous the only thing i have right now is a Remo practice pad and a Digital metronome and a couple sets of sticks. So i guess my question is what kind of equipment do you recommend... From store bought, to craigslist, to self concocted. I am new like I said so Im not looking for high quality stuff just something to get my learning started. Ive thought about used electric sets but dont want to be gimped and not be able to understand how an acoustic set actually reacts. Thats why Im here though because i dont know.
I have been PASSioNATE about drums for a very long time and I swear sometimes when I am listening to Music it is all I hear. Throughout school growing up I was always tapping my hands, pens, pencils, feet... whatever... When im driving Im beating my steering wheel and tapping my feet when I can... I want so badly to learn how to play and I feel like this site can be a priceless wealth of knowledge to get me going from basic to advanced.
If there is ANYTHING I can do, Administrators, to help the site please let me know... Obviously I cant really submit videos or advice yet cause well... Thats what Im here to find :P hopefully I can get to a point and return the favor and then some. Please let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do... I really want to help out and become an active part of this community.
Thank You In Advance to EVERYONE who posts some advice here and anywhere else on this website

I may catch slack for this comment, but I was the kind of guy that tuned his drums high, mid and low lol. I wish you lived closer Kyle, then we could jam ;)

Cool, I think you'll like it :) It's a great kit, and I would recommend it as an excellent mid-range kit for anyone. Roland TD-6 Mesh!

Drumfreak had superb advice for another "newbie" just starting out on the drums. Check out the thread at "http://www.drummerconnection.com/community/44638-new-scene#comment-9110"
As for going with e-drums or acoustic, there is no doubt a zillion good defenses for each camp. Here's my pitch for e-drums.
I still have my Ludwig kit from my youth (20's) but I haven't played it for over 20 years. The main reason I stopped was because of the very dilemma you mentioned. Its simply not practical for me because neighbors live so close they could not possibly ignore them if I was playing. I live in a typical "tract home" in a typical residential neighborhood and acoustics would still be too loud to remain on good terms with neighbors. So unless you have an EXCEPTIONALLY sound proofed apartment, it will disturb your neighbors for sure.
Just over a year ago I got a set of e-drums and that has been the biggest source of fun since I played my acoustics in college. With electronic drums, I control the volume that comes through my headphones. So to me it sounds like Im in studio. To the neighbors, they have no idea I even play the drums. To someone in the house, closing the door is all thats needed to watch TV in peace in the other room. My e-drums all have rubber coated surfaces, so it sounds like your rubber practice pads to anyone in the room.
I am blown away by the sound quality. All the sounds produce by the electronic module are actually digitally recorded samples of acoustic drums.
Being electronic, I have a HUGE selection of sounds to choose from for assigning to any pad. And I have a HUGE number of customizable parameters and combinations that are not possible to achieve with acoustic drums. I could never afford acoustic equivalents for all the different sounds available to me with my e-drums.
E-drums are much easier to record due to the electronic signal processing built in. It essentially the same as recording an electric guitar by plugging in a cord to a recording device (like your typical PC).
As a matter of physics, no electronic drums can ever sound as perfect or natural as the sound of LIVE acoustic drums. But I think they sound virtually as good as RECORDED acoustic drums (since thats really what they are). In my opinion, they have at least 95% of the fidelity of professionally RECORDED acoustic drums.
I would love to have the ability to set up my Ludwigs. But even if I could, I would still keep my e-drums right next to them. Its only because of e-drums that was able to get back into playing at all. And having experienced the e-drum technology, I couldn't give up the options and controls they provide.
Whether you're interested in acoustics or e-drums, I STRONGLY urge you NOT to rush out and buy anything without doing your homework. There are TONS of choices and each has benefits and limitations. Since you live in an apartment, Im presuming you dont have tons of money, so you want to make informed choices based on criteria that matters to YOU.
I think your enthusiasm will make the biggest difference in your learning and enjoyment if you can keep it going. Make time to scour this site for the expertise that others have made available. Practice. Have fun!

Barefoot I never thanked you for all your input. You broke things down well. It has helped alot and helped to put things in perspective. It is looking like im gonna shoot for an electric set because I dont see myself in a home anytime soon. I have also been doin alot of looking around this site and I am definitely finding out how much of a resource it is going to be.
Heres to hoping the IRS doesnt take all my money so I can get myself a set !!

You are certainly welcome. Hope I didnt over do it. Being an engineer, I usually get carried away with details and put readers in a coma ;-) I also hope you can take advantage of the TD-6 Drumfreak is parting with. I think that would be an excellent match for your circumstances and its a great product line... Bobby

It did not put me in a coma at all... I loved how in depth you went... gave me alot of good food for thought and you broke it down using simple logic and gave me a new insight to electronic drums.

Hey there buddy, I would recommend looking into Electronic drums if you really want to play at home and practice quite a bit.. Especially in the Apartment setting! Electronic kits are very quiet, you'll here some thumping but nothing like a real drumset. I'm sure you can get away with it.
As well, electronic kits have metronomes built in, playalongs that you can slow down and speed up, etc. So, essentially, this turns out to be the ultimate practice machine.
We at DrummerConnection.com are selling two Roland TD-20 - the Uber Roland Vdrum kits for $3,000 each. These are the mega sets that usually cost around $5,500 in the stores, etc. We used them to shoot drum lessons on, and other than some minor wear and tear they are in excellent condition.
Also, I have a Roland TD-6 Mesh Head Kit that has everything you need except a drum throne and a kick pedal to play. I'm going to let that one go for $750 which is incredibly cheap. Great shape on that one as well.
Contact me if you are interested in purchasing any of these kits so we can get you more details.
Thanks!

Aaron,
Did you buy that to learn to play on or is it just a substitute for when you are unable to play your other set? I would just worry about being able to learn the tones of a set and how to make everything sound together.
Thanks in Advance,
Kyle
