Best Sounding Snare Drum Dollar for Dollar

Gary M - Sat, 07/24/2010 - 21:36 | 2,731 views

I might be buying another snare, I play southern rock and country. What is a great sounding snare, that I won't have to take out a loan from the bank. One that will stay in tune.
Thanks....GaryM

You can always try a Pork Pie Big Black Brass. A lot of people who have owned it consider it a "Poor Man's Black Beauty." Costs only about $240 on Musician's Friend.

I looked into it and to build a snare drum, it's about $100 for the hardware and the same site sells shells, too. They sell copper, alluminum, brass, all kinds of wood, even acrylic.

Sorry I meant to add that the shells are about $70-$150 depending on size and material.

I'm going to go vintage and say the Rogers Dynasonic is the best snare drum ever made. IN almost any configuration. It's priceless. So dollar for dollar is a bit tricky to evaluate:)

Although I prefer the maple shell 5x14. Now if I could only find one again.

I bought a 14" x 5 1.2" aluminum Savage when they were on sale for $25 at Musicians Friend as a backup which I now use as my main retiring an old Supra-phonic. I get compliments on it at most every show! Don't know if they still carry them or not.

I recently got a 5.5x14 Maple PDP with wood hoops. That thing sounds AMAZING!!!I only dropped about $225 on it, and I get compliments on it at almost every gig. It sounds great tuned high or low. VERY versatile drum!
