On May 5th, 2010, Damian King and Eric Rosebrock from DrummerConnection.com sit down with famed drummer JoJo Mayer for an interview at Seminole Music & Sound.

JoJo Mayer: Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer
From Wikipedia:
Jojo Mayer (born 18 January 1963) is a highly acclaimed Swiss drummer
born in Zurich and currently residing in New
York City. Son of a touring musician, Mayer began his career as a
drummer at an early age, receiving his first drum set at the age of two.
Having taught himself throughout his childhood, Mayer broke out into
the professional music scene at the age of 18, joining the Monty
Alexander group. Touring with the group would launch him into the major
jazz music scene, playing at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux,
Nice, and Athens etc, and leading to his gigs with jazz-greats such as Dizzy Gillespie and Nina
Simone. Eventually, after playing with a great variety of artists,
Mayer would move away from jazz and into Drum 'n' Bass electronica.
Jojo Mayer is known for bringing together jazz, drum
and bass, jungle, and other
influences. He is also famous for his ability to play the rhythms of
programmed jungle drum 'n' bass music on acoustic drums, terming this
technique "reverse engineering", a phrase borrowed
from computing.
He executes this approach using various methods such as the Heel-toe bass drum technique, the Moeller stroke, and the
"pull-out" or "push-pull" accent which takes the beat on the rebound.
Using this technique he can play beats at astonishing speeds. A few of
his main influences are Tony
Williams, Jack DeJohnette and Buddy
Rich.
He plays with the guitarist David Fiuczynski in the avant-garde pop rock band Screaming Headless Torsos and in
the fusion jazz band Intergalactic
Maiden Ballet.
He is the founder of the Prohibited Beatz clique in the NYC
underground live music scene.

Mayer is a long-time Sonor endorser and also uses Sabian cymbals. He
has also collaborated with Sabian to create his own line of "Fierce"
cymbals, part of Sabian's top-tier Vault line. His Vault Fierce cymbals
feature a raw, unlathed finish, and extensive hand hammering. Mayer uses
various series of drums, often depending on what is available at the
venue, with this general setup:
14" or 13" Snare Drum
10" Tom Tom
14" Floor Tom
13", 12", or even 14" Side Snare
20" or 22" Bass Drum
These sizes and the actual number of drums may vary, depending on the
musical context.
I love to watch Drummers using the traditional grip.
jo jo has and is a big influence on me. thanks so much jo jo.
JoJo Mayer intimated that he wants to teach and tell instead of "show" and I commend him for that. I have little respect for great drummers that only want to get something out of it in terms of dollars. I have never really spent any time listening to JoJo other than this interview but let me say this Billy Ashbaugh is a fantastic drummer and teacher. In my books he ranks with the best, yet he may not have the reputation but is serving the drumming community with excellence. Thanks for giving back, big time Billy and Drummer Connection. Fantastic!
I like your playing a lot!!! Sorry but you look skinny I hope that you have food enough!!!! Bless YOU W: Pekka From Finland!!!!
Thank you Jojo Mayers For a good guiding DVD!! I don´t have it yet but... who never knows!!!
Bless You Jojo Mayer! I like your Playing... But I hope that you are saved also, or if not? Then I hope that you will found Jesus Christ in to your heart and G E T in to the heaven!!! That´s my wish for you and everythin good for your life too!!!
acmıyooooooooo.....
I'm just sooo amazed that nobody had anything to say about this interview so far !!!! At least say "Woaaaawwww !!!!".
Secret weapons is amazing, I can't wait for that version 2 !!! Jojo is unbelievable !
Cool work DrummerConnection !!!
Tell me about it Sehb.. the story of this website.. tons of hard work, very little feedback. :(
Nice Website and thanks for the interview. I'm mostly interested in 'live' drumming with some improvisation. But I guess after you post a video to you toob it becomes static media of itself and loses the aspect of being a live representation of a few minutes in the life. I was thinking, I sure would have like to seen the clinic myself. Great audio on these clips too. Thank You.
Hi, thanks for the comments! We do our best. I agree that Live Drumming with Improvisation is always fun... Stay tuned as we do live Broadcasts here and there!
Great interview guys!!
Mr. Mayer is a great drummer. I'd like that Sabian Fierce. $289 for the crash...I'm gonna start saving =)
Is there full footage of the clinic??
Hi, there is not full coverage.. We agreed to JoJo that we would shoot enough footage to provide us intro / exit scenes in our videos. I would recommend his DVD though!
O ya? ok thanks..and I've had his DVD for years now, best decision I've ever made haha, also good interview.
Thanks, we appreciate your feedback! Enjoy Drummer Connection!
This was a great honor to sit with JoJo Mayer and get the scoop! What a really cool drummer!

Jonathan Toews watched the end of the fifth game of the MBT Shoes from the Blackhawks bench, unable to play after a hit to his head.Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron was in a Chicago hospital after leaving the United Center by ambulance. As the Stanley Cup Final approaches a sixth and potential clinching game on Monday night, the attention shifted from the players on the ice to the ones who might not make it there, including two of the top forwards and biggest stars in the series. It's not the best situation for either team, Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask said Sunday after both teams flew back to Boston. But it's a tough sport, and injuries happen. When you leave it all out there to help your team win, that's all part of the game.Bergeron was injured in the second period of Game 5 on Saturday night, which the Blackhawks won 3-1 to take a 3-2 lead in the series. He made two brief appearances on the ice in the third period but something was obviously wrong and he was unable to complete either shift.Toews, who won the Selke Award as the NHL's top defensive forward - Bergeron was a finalist - missed the entire third period after a shot to the head from MBT Sandals shop. They're both great players, Chicago winger Patrick Sharp said. I think any coach in the league, any player in the league would like to have those guys on their team. They take pride in taking faceoffs, playing well away from the puck, making their linemates better, (they're) both big parts of the locker room.I can't speak for what Boston is dealing with, with Bergeron. I know I don't need to say much about Jonathan. I think everyone knows what we think of him in our locker room. Hopefully we can have him back for (Monday).Bergeron, who was taken to the hospital for observation, was released later Saturday night and rejoined his teammates for a team meal.He was crushing some food, Bruins forward Brad Marchand said Sunday.Bergeron was on the team flight back from Chicago. After the Bruins' bus arrived at the TD Garden in the afternoon, he walked without crutches or assistance to a car and was driven away. He's good. He came back with us and everything so hopefully he can play, Marchand said. He looked really good today. He had a nice suit on, very dashing. Obviously, he's a big part of the team and hopefully he can play. The Blackhawks lost Toews after Boychuk knocked him down in the slot, making contact with his head. Boychuk wasn't penalized, and Michael Kors Handbags spokesman John Dellapina said on Sunday that the league reviewed the hit and there will be no supplemental discipline.I think they said it was clean, wasn't it? Then I agree with them, Bruins coach Claude Julien said. I'm not going to hide from that. If it wasn't a clean hit - I've been a guy that supported those kind of things that we need to get out of the game. But it was a clean hit.Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville alluded to the contact with the head but then said, I'm not going to go there.Toews was tied with Patrick Kane for the Blackhawks team lead with 23 goals during the regular season. Since being reunited with Kane on Chicago's top line in Game 4, Chicago has rallied to take the lead in the best-of-seven series. Before he was knocked out of the Game 5, Toews assisted on both of Kane's goals. He's our leader, Chicago defenseman Michael Kors Bags online sale. You know, he's one of those guys, and when he's full-speed he gives everything he's got every game. That's something that is tough to replace.Quenneville said Toews was doing much better and the team is optimistic he will be able to play in Game 6.We'll see how he is. I think the progress today, he's doing real good, Quenneville said. We'll visit in the morning, and he seemed fine. So nothing has changed. Nothing is different. We'll keep an eye on him, and we'll go from there. With or without Toews and Bergeron, the Blackhawks have a chance to clinch their second Stanley Cup title in four seasons on Monday night in Boston. If they lose, the series returns to Chicago for a decisive seventh game on Wednesday. And that, Julien said, is why he wasn't worried about whether Toews will play or not.I think I should be looking in my backyard and make sure I've got my guys playing tomorrow before I start worrying about the game plan with them, he said. Right now we know it's up to us to ... bring our 'A' game if we want a chance to win. That part of it should be more important than who they have and don't have in their lineup.
