Local friends and fans came out yesterday to All Pro Percussion as they
were hosting Randy Van Patten's first debut clinic. You may me familiar
with Randy by his videos posted on YouTube, and his myspace. Last
night's clinic at All Pro Percussion covers the same techniques and
tricks as seen in his current DVD, “Extreme Drum Set Techniques” which he self-produced. Throughout the clinic, Randy kept a smile on
everyone's face with his wacky style of humor. There was never a dull
moment in the room as he puts a fun spin on his lessons.

Randy is a big fan of having a foundation as a drummer. Knowing the
basic rudiments can help further your playing, and your hand technique.
Randy explains simple rudiments like the paradiddle, and the double
stroke roll, and how these rudiments can be fun by applying them all
over the kit. Whether playing them in a beat, a fill, or in a solo, you
can make your drumming more creative, and more fluent.

When it comes to little tricks and ideas for your drumming, Randy can
help. He talks about and explains some cool ideas to apply to your
everyday playing, such as the “hi hat stomp”. This is a cool exercise he
teaches to help bring more feel and rhythm into your playing.

-“That's a nice sounding snare” says Randy as he is seen

playing on a snare drum by “Cyclone Drums” a new custom drum company out

of Brandon, Florida. Founder and owner Brian Bernard, in attendance of

the clinic offered Randy to play one of his snare drums for the performance.

All in all, Randy made it clear to everyone in the room that drumming
should be fun. And putting many of Randy's ideas and techniques into
your playing can really open yourself up to a new level of drumming.
