The Snare Drum Olympics was started in 1998 by NSMD editor John Aldridge as a
contest among drum makers to see who can “outsnare” the others and attempt to answer
the question “Who makes the best snare drum?”. Drums are categorized by their intended
application and are rated on sound, appearance and overall appeal in a two tiered judging
process. To keep things on an even keel the competition is structured to put
manufacturers who produced the same quantities of drums in the same class. The playing
field is leveled even further by having an impartial session drummer tune each drum to its
maximum potential. Each manufacturer is allowed to select the heads and snares that
they feel most appropriate for their drums and tune them before shipping. The tuner will
tweak tuning to account for slippage of tension and detuning in shipping.
In the past the Snare Drum Olympics featured snare drums from 25 different companies.
We are expecting double to triple that because small drum builder output has increased
drastically since the last Olympics in 2002.The entry fee is $50 per
drum; This is to cover the expenses of the show, the judges,
photography, awards materials and labor.
