We are sad to announce that drumming legend Jim Chapin passed away on July 4th, 2009. Jim will always be remembered...

James Forbes “Jim” Chapin was a well-regarded American Jazz drummer, with many achievements in his lifetime. He was most remembered for his two published books entitled, Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer, volumes I and II. His drumming and teaching has inspired drummers all over the world, and his legacy will continue to rise many greats in the drumming industry for generations to come!

Back in March, Drummer Connection in cooperation with Dom Famularo had the opportunity to honor Jim Chapin with his Lifetime Achievement Award. It was a historic chance to thank Jim of all that he has done for drummers and musicians everywhere. Click here to see Drummer Connection present Jim Chapin's Lifetime Achievement award.

RIP Jim Chapin. I was so happy to meet him at a small clinic at BennettDrums up by Seattle. Instead of talking bop independence like I expected, he sat down and played the funkiest beat I'm ever likely to hear an octogenarian play! Then he taught us about proper wrist technique, so you can hit hard and not hurt your wrists. Tied it in with military drumming history. That changed my playing. And of course there was his classic book, which I went through about 30 years earlier....

The entire drumming community will miss you Jim. I am upset that I never had the chance to take lessons with you. Meeting you in general would have been an honor. My deepest sympathy to Jim's family. You'll always be remembered.
