This one’s fun!! In today’s lesson we’re going to begin to create a series of grooves by reading rhythms on the kick from the PDF download sheet. Remember to keep the hand pattern consistent throughout. This is some funky stuff….enjoy!

Drummer Drew Says Good Idea

Thanks for the tip whereby you played only the first bass drum note of the groove for four measures then added the second, third, fourth, etc. I had never thought of that. I'm gonna try that on some Latin grooves I've been working on.

Sweet...please give it a try. It has helped me tremendously in the past. Let me know how it goes!

SJDrummer Says I will apply this elsewhere

I really like how this sounds, but its not something that would fit quite right in the songs my band makes. I'm thinking maybe making it more linear, give it a punk pulse. I have to go tune my toms in a bit so I will give this a try while Im out there. Thanks Billy!

As a drummer that has never taken formal lessons I am grateful that you are posting these up. I don't have a set at the moment, but hearing and being able to visualize and "Air Drum" allows me to get a broader base to start with when I get healed up and able to buy a new set.

When a person uses their wrists, it gets really easy to do the little grace notes as Billy demonstrated. Based on my experience, it becomes second nature. Your mind/hands start to think in 8th's or in this case 16th's. You can't help but to want to add those notes because you're already thinking it. Part of it also, is to visualize what you are playing. Not just when at the kit but when you're off it. Again, based solely on my experience, some of the best practice comes from "picturing" what you are playing if you aren't able to be behind the kit at that particular moment. It has also helped with my guitaring and bassing. Thanks Billy for yet another sweet lesson that even I can use even after playing for many years because I always say "a person can never stop learning something new no matter how good you are."

Another great one Billy! I must say, as I haven't mentioned it before, I love the PDF downloads that come with the lessons on this site. It makes the lesson worth so much more (even though they're all FREE!)

These are cool Billy. It would be nice to see different kinds of fills to use with these. Maybe sextuplets?
